Description: About 5 inches long, the male is yellow with
a black cap, wings and tail. The female is yellowish green with no cap, black
wings and tail. She lays 4 - 6 bluish white eggs that hatch in 12 - 14 days.
The young leave the nest 11- 17 days later.
Habitat: Goldfinches can be found on farms, in suburbs and in gardens. Their nests are formed of weeds and vines and the downy filaments of certain seeds, and are built in shrubs or trees. Foods: They eat seeds, insects and berries. At bird feeders they prefer hulled sunflower seed and thistle seeds. Did you know?: The goldfinch weaves its nest so tightly,
it will fill with rainwater unless a parent bird shields it with outspread
wings. American Goldfinches almost never eat insects., relying heavily on
seed. Americans love this gorgeous finch because of the males vibrant plumage
in spring. They are easy to attract to bird feeders, though they do have
more expensive tastes, preferring nyger seed. |
