    Description: About 5 1/4 inches long, the have a black cap and bib with white cheeks. They lay 6 - 8 white eggs with speckles which hatch in 12 days. The fledgling leave the nest in 16 days.

    Habitat: Chickadees live in  woods, farmlands and suburbs. They use birdhouses, excavate a cavity in rotted wood or find a natural tree cavity, and build their nests of moss and woody fibers.

    Foods:  They eat insects, seeds, berries and are fond of sunflower seeds.

    Facts: The call of this plump bird is its name. Chickadees, constant visitors to feeding stations, often feed upside down. The smaller Carolina Chickadee of the Southeast has less buff on the sides, less white in the wing, and four or five notes in its whistled song instead of two or three. The brown capped Boreal Chickadee (4 1/4 in.) is a winter visitor along the Canadian border. The western Chestnut capped Chickadee ( 4 1/2) has a dull brown cap and a bright chestnut back.
