Description: About 6 1/2 inches long, the
male is bright blue with a red throat and breast. The female is a lighter
grayish blue with a buff throat and breast. She lays 3 - 6 pale blue eggs
that hatch in 12 - 18 days. The young leave the nest 16 - 21 days later.
Habitat: Bluebirds are found in rural areas and open woodlands. They nest in trees cavities, birdhouses or abandoned woodpecker holes. The nest is formed of grass, stems and pine needles, lined with hair or feathers. Foods: They eat insects from the ground and berries, raisins, meal worms and peanut butter from bird feeders. Facts: Is an early spring migrant in the North. It is a thrush, as the spotted breast of the young testifies. No other blue bird is the East has chestnut brown breast. The Western Bluebird has chestnut on the back as well. The adult male Mountain bluebird of the Rockies has a lighter sky blue belly. Bluebirds may be attracted to nesting boxes with 1 1/2 holes. been crowed out by sparrows and starlings. Putting up bluebird nesting boxes
helps their population increase again. |
