Description: About 25 inches long, in summer
they are white with pale gray back and wings, a yellow bill with a red spot
underneath near the tip, yellow eyes and pinkish legs. The female lays 3
brownish eggs with dark marks. The eggs hatch in about 26 days and the young
make their first flight about 35 days after hatching.
Habitat: Herring gulls are near salt or fresh water coasts, in fields, suburbs, cities and dumps. They nest on the grounding a shallow cup of grasses and seaweed. Foods: They eat the eggs and young of other gulls as well as fish, clams, rodents, garbage and insects. Facts: Is an abundant bird along the Atlantic Coast and parts of the interior. It is a great scavenger Black wings tips of adults contrast with gray wings and back. Legs are flesh colored. Immature birds are dull gray brown, becoming whiter with maturity. California and Ring billed Gulls (17 in.) are smaller with dull yellowish or greenish legs; Ring billed has a black ring on the bill.
