| Description: About 12 inches long with
a pointed tail, the male is gay brown with black dots on the wings. He
has a light gray crown and the sides of his neck are iridescent. The female
is brown on the head in 14 -15 days. The young leave the nest about 2 weeks
later.
Habitat: Mourning doves lie in suburbs and almost any open area. They build a flat, flimsy nests of twigs, grass and pine needles in the fork of a tree or on a branch. Foods: They eat seeds, grain, and some insects. Facts: Browner and slimmer than the Rock Dove and with a long pointed tail, the Mourning Dove nests in every state and providence. It is named from its melancholy call: "Coo-ah, coo, coo, coo." The white tail border is conspicuous in flight. Flight is rapid, and this dove is prized as a favorite game species in many states. The White winged Dove of the Southwest is similar, but a large white wing southwestern Inca Dove (6 1/2) is like a miniature Mourning Dove. Did you know?: Mourning doves produce "pigeon
milk" (although its not really milk), The parent opens its mouth and the
infant bird sticks its head in to reach the nutritious food.
