Ruby Throated Hummingbird

    Description: Abut 3 1/2 inches long, the male has green upper parts, an iridescent red throat, white breast and belly, and black on the head and tail. The female has a whitish throat and underbelly. She lays 2 eggs that hatch in 16 days. The young leave the nest in one month.

    Habitat: Hummingbirds live in woods, orchards, parks and gardens. They build a cup shaped nest on a tree limb. The nest s made of plant down, flakes of lichen and bud scales bound together with spiders web.

    Foods:  They eat flower nectar and sugar water from feeders, but rely on ants, beetles, mosquitoes and spiders for protein.

    Did you know?: Ruby throated must often fight bumblebees access to flowers.
