The Galaxies

Gravity has more use than justkeeping us grounded on the Earth. It holds the solar system togetherand also links the Milky Way to a local group of about thirty other galaxies. The closest large spiral galaxy is Andromeda, but its 2.2 million lightyears (twenty six trillions miles) away. These ere just two of thetrillions of galaxies thought to exist in the universe. They varyin shape, size, mass and energy output and are considered to be eithernormal or active galaxies.
Normal, the largest percentageof all known galaxies, derive their energy or light from nuclear reactionswithin their stars and are referred to as either spirals, ellipticals orirregulars.
Deep space photography showsthat galaxies go on and on and on into the universe. The
re are tinygalaxies that are scattered like grains of sand across the heavens andare as far as 10,000,000,000 light years away! Remember that the distancelight travels in one year (six million, million miles) is known as a lightyear.
