Sunspots and Flares
The Sun is continuously puttingon
an amazing fireworks display of sunspots, flares and prominence thatscientists
say can affect our own atmosphere.
Although the Sun appears smooth,its
visible surface, called the photosphere, is actually bubbly ( likeboiling
milk or water).
Hot gases that start at thecore
of the Sun often erupt violently through this outer layer of "bubbles."
These jets of gas are called prominences and can last for hours or evenmonths.
They are usually seen at the edge of the Sun's disk and canshoot hundreds
of thousands of miles into the atmosphere.
Sunspots are areas on the surfaceof
the Sun that are dark in color. They appear this way because theyare
cooler than the hotter, glowing gas bubbles that surround them.
Solar flares are associatedwith
both sunspots and prominence are like bursting bubbles, discharginghigh
energy radiation. They are like huge thunderstorms on Earth, but on
the Sun are referred to as magnetic storms or explosions.
