The Sun

When you see the Sun shining in the Sky during the day, you are actually seeing a star, a huge fiery ball of glowing gases.  The reason you can see its round shape so well is that it is fairly close to the Earth compared to other stars and objects in the sky. The Sun is the only one our Solar System, but it is only one of billions in our galaxy.  The Sun is known as a yellow main sequence star.  There are much hotter stars which are blue and cooler ones which are red.  The hotter and brighter star is, the shorter its life span.  This is because it is bringing off its gases at a much faster rate. The surface temperature of the Sun is about 10,000ºF, but at its center it can be a s hot as 27,000,000ºF! This is where billions of atoms of gas (called hydrogen) are fusing together to form another kind of gas (helium). This "nuclear reaction" releases energy which travels to Earth as heat and light. Did you know? You should never look directly at the Sun.  This is because its light is so bright and powerful, it can actually harm your eyes or even cause blindness!
