Dimetrodon
(dy-MET-ro-don)
Length: 10 feet
Lived during: Permian
Found: North America
Name means: Two measure tooth.
Dimetrodon by far the oldest creature on the pages, was
not a dinosaur. In fact, it wasn't even related to the dinosaurs.
Some scientist say that this ferocious meat eater was more likely an extremely
early ancestor to mammals. Like the much, much later Ouranosaurus,
this animal had a sail on its back. This may have helped to control
its body temperature.
Lived at the same time as: Apatosaurus, (not included
in these pages) was similar looking plant eater that lived at the same
time and place.
